IRS Refund Tracker

Check the status of your federal tax refund directly with the IRS.

Check Your Refund on IRS.gov

Opens the official IRS "Where's My Refund?" tool in a new tab. You will need your SSN, filing status, and exact refund amount.

What You Need to Check Your Status

  • Social Security number (or ITIN)
  • Filing status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, etc.)
  • Exact refund amount from your return

Typical Refund Timelines

E-File + Direct Deposit
~21 days
Fastest option. Status available 24 hours after IRS receives your e-filed return.
Paper Filing
6 - 8 weeks
Status available 4 weeks after you mail your return.
Amended Return (Form 1040-X)
~16 weeks
Can take up to 20 weeks. Check status with the "Where's My Amended Return?" tool.
EITC / ACTC Returns
Late Feb.
By law, refunds claiming EITC or ACTC cannot be issued before mid-February.

Common Refund Status Meanings

Return Received
The IRS has received your tax return and is processing it. No action is needed on your part.
Refund Approved
Your refund has been approved and is being prepared for deposit or mailing. You should receive it within a few days.
Refund Sent
Your refund has been deposited to your bank account or a check has been mailed. Allow 5 days for direct deposit to post or several weeks for a mailed check.
Return Under Review
The IRS is reviewing your return for accuracy. This can take 45-60 days. You may receive a letter requesting additional information.
Refund Offset
Part or all of your refund was applied to a past-due obligation such as federal tax, state tax, child support, or student loans.

Tips for a Faster Refund

  • File electronically instead of mailing a paper return
  • Choose direct deposit rather than a paper check
  • Double-check your SSN, bank account, and routing numbers
  • Ensure all income documents (W-2s, 1099s) match IRS records
  • File early in the season to avoid peak processing delays
  • Avoid calling the IRS unless the tool instructs you to -- phone agents cannot provide more detail than the online tracker
